Hallandale is its former name, as the city’s name was officially changed to Hallandale Beach back in 1999. Back in its beginnings, it was settled by farmers of Swedish descent in the 1890s, and named for a trading-post operator, Luther Halland.
No stranger to hurricanes, it was severely damaged by a hurricane in 1926, but it bounced back and has nicely developed as a popular tourist location and a retirement community. Located in southeastern Florida, it has an estimated population of around 40,000 residents.
It’s home to Gulfstream Horse Racing Park and Casino, Mardi Gras Casino, and the host of the World Classic greyhound racing track. It sits along the Atlantic Ocean, located 15 miles north of Miami, just south of Hollywood (not California), Florida.
